Broken Garage Door Spring Repair in Carson, CA

Springs do the heavy lifting on a garage door. When one breaks, the door may refuse to open, open a few inches and stop, or feel far heavier than it should. Leave it closed and call us.

How to tell a spring is broken

  • A loud bang from the garage, often when nobody was using the door.
  • A visible gap of a couple of inches in the coil of the spring above the door.
  • The opener runs and strains but the door lifts only a few inches, or not at all.
  • Lift cables hang loose beside the door.
  • The door slams down fast when it closes.

Torsion springs and extension springs

Torsion springs

These sit on a steel bar across the top of the door opening. They twist to store energy and lift the door through cables and drums at each end. Many two-car doors have two of them.

Extension springs

These run along the horizontal tracks on each side of the door and stretch as the door closes. They should have safety cables running through them so a broken spring cannot whip across the garage.

Both types are under heavy tension. Adjusting or removing them without winding bars and training is how most garage door injuries happen, so this is one repair to leave to a technician.

What a spring repair involves

  1. Securing the door so it cannot move while the spring is off.
  2. Releasing any remaining tension and removing the broken spring.
  3. Fitting a spring matched to the weight and height of your door.
  4. Checking the cables, drums, bearings and rollers that work with the spring.
  5. Balancing the door so it stays put when stopped halfway, then testing the opener.

On doors with two springs, both springs usually wear at the same rate. Ask about the condition of the second spring so you can decide whether to replace both at the same visit.

Until we get there

  • Do not try to lift the door by hand or with the opener.
  • If the door is open, leave it open and keep people and cars out from under it. Do not pull the emergency release cord.
  • Unplug the opener so nobody tries the button.

A broken spring can happen at any hour. We are open 24 hours: see emergency garage door repair or call 310-362-5106.
