Garage Door Troubleshooting and Repair in Carson, CA

A garage door usually warns you before it fails: a new noise, a jerky start, a door that reverses for no reason. We track down the cause and fix the part that is actually worn or broken.

Problems we repair

Door will not open or close

Common causes are a broken spring, a misaligned safety sensor, a locked door, or an opener problem. Each one needs a different fix, so we check the door and the opener separately.

Door reverses before it closes

The opener reverses when the photo eyes near the floor cannot see each other or when it senses too much resistance. Dirty lenses, a bumped sensor, or a binding track are the usual suspects.

Loud, grinding or shaking door

Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges and bent track sections make noise long before they fail. Catching them early is cheaper than replacing a cable or a panel later.

Sagging or dented panels

A panel bent by a car or a ball can stop the door from rolling smoothly. Depending on the damage, a panel can be reinforced or replaced, or the whole door may be the better fix.

Worn bottom seal or weatherstripping

Gaps at the bottom let in dust, water and pests. Replacing the bottom seal is a small job that makes the garage easier to keep clean.

Door moves slowly or unevenly

Uneven movement often points to a spring losing tension or a cable wearing on one side. See broken spring repair and off-track and cable repair.

Checks you can do yourself

  • Look at the two photo eyes near the floor. Wipe the lenses and make sure both small lights are steady.
  • Check that the manual lock bar on the inside of the door is not engaged.
  • Replace the remote battery and see whether the wall button works. If the wall button works and the remote does not, the door itself is probably fine.
  • Look along both tracks for anything blocking the rollers.

Stop there. Springs, cables and the bottom brackets hold a lot of tension and are not safe to adjust without the right tools.

When to stop using the door

Call before you run the door again if you see any of these:

  • A gap in a spring coil above the door, or a spring hanging loose on the side tracks.
  • A frayed or slack lift cable.
  • A roller outside the track, or the door hanging crooked.
  • A panel cracked across its width.

Running the opener in these cases can bend the track or pull the door further out of line. If it happens at night, see emergency garage door repair.
