Remote does nothing, wall button works
Start with the remote battery and the lock or vacation button on the wall control. If neither helps, the remote may need to be reprogrammed or replaced.
Door starts to close, then reverses
The safety sensors are the first thing to check. If the lenses are clean and aligned, the opener’s force or travel settings may need adjusting, or the door may be binding.
Opener hums but the door stays put
This often means a broken spring, a door that is still locked, or a failed gear or capacitor in the opener. Do not keep pressing the button; it can burn out the motor.
Opener runs but the door is disconnected
If someone pulled the emergency release, the trolley needs to be reconnected. Do this only when the door is closed and the springs are intact.
Installing a new opener
The main opener styles are chain drive, belt drive, screw drive and wall-mounted (jackshaft) units. They differ mostly in noise, the space they need on the ceiling, and how they handle heavy doors.
- Belt drives are usually quieter, which helps if there is a bedroom above or beside the garage.
- Wall-mounted units free the ceiling, which suits garages with storage racks or high ceilings.
- Many newer openers offer phone control and alerts if the door is left open.
California requires new residential garage door openers to include a battery backup (Senate Bill 969, in effect since July 2019), so the door still works during a power outage.
An opener only works well on a balanced door. Before installing one, we check the springs and tracks. A new opener on a door with a weak spring will strain and wear out early.
Test your opener’s safety reverse
Once a month, lay a piece of wood flat on the floor in the door’s path and close the door. It should reverse when it touches the wood. Then wave something through the sensor beam while the door is closing; it should reverse again. If either test fails, stop using the opener and contact us.
